HMS Ark Royal – work in progress. Oil on linen panel. 20 x 16.

Started this one over a year ago, didn’t like how it was going and shelved it. Something prompted me to do a re-visit, so here we are. Repainted the sky today, and worked on the ocean too; still have to repaint the ship’s wake and do a bit more work around the bow wave. I’ve gone over some of the actual ship too, trying to work in a looser, less fussy style – make it look a little more ‘painterly’. Hopefully things will work out better this time and I’ll actually get her finished…

On the telephone

Apologies for the poor photo, I’ll try to get a better one soon. Just had a week over in the UK but was very busy with one thing and another, so only managed to get one painting in. This was a plein air grabbed one evening on the Cornish coast just before sundown. I could have included the famous Godrevy lighthouse, which sits just off the headland, but that seemed to be just a little too much ‘fromage’!

Barmouth after the rain

After the rain, Barmouth. Oil on canvas panel. 8 x 10.

Spending the Christmas break on the sunny (!) Welsh coast. I brought my painting gear with me and was able to take advantage of a brief gap in the rain to paint a little this afternoon. The rain had of course been replaced by strong winds, so I had to bungee my easel to a railing to do this…

Nothing special but was nice to actually paint again after a long gap with nothing produced apart from the odd pencil sketch (some of them very odd but that’s another story).

The weekly brush

Tin mines at Botallack. Oils. 12 x 8.5.

Squeezed in a little time for some painting this afternoon. Some click, as I mentioned in a previous post, and this one seemed to go reasonably well. I’ll give it a fresh look in the morning and may make the odd tweak here and there, but it’s fairly close to being finished I think.

Chilmark beach

Surf on Chilmark beach. Oils. 8 x 10.

Another couple from this afternoon. It was pretty windy down on the beach and I had to paint both of these with a thumb holding the panel tight against my pochade box. A bit of juggling involved to get everything done, and lots of sand in the paint. Added texture! Not especially happy with either of these, but a few more lessons learned and some more practice has been had.

Late afternoon light, Chilmark beach. Oils. 8 x 10.

Squibnocket Point, afternoon light

Squibnocket Point, afternoon light. Oils. 8 x 10.

Another plein air from the trip to Martha’s Vineyard.  This one looked good while I was sitting on the beach, less so when I got it home. Ah well…

The sea is probably too dark, and also I suspect it might be good for water-skiing. The aerial perspective isn’t really there either. Colours seem much more intense now than when I was outside painting this.
