So, after a hiatus of almost two years, I’m trying to paint again. This is a start on one of the massive World War Two flak towers still standing here in Vienna. This particular one is in Arenbergpark.
Very pleased to once again have some work in the AFAS annual exhibition. As usual it’s being held in the Mall Galleries, dates are 11-16 July. Try to drop in if you’re in London!
These are the paintings I have in the show.
Latest (final?) version after a few minor adjustments.
Made some various tweaks to the face today, and added some more texture to the duffle coat. I’m still not really happy with some aspects of how I’ve painted the face, but have decided to stop as I’m getting that niggly feeling that if I fiddle about much more I may mess things up entirely. (Unless of course the client wants me to adjust anything).
Interestingly, I seem to have made one of those paintings where the eyes follow you around the room…
Here’s a closer view of his face
The result of today’s work on this one. I think the hands, face and cap are finished. Not sure whether to do any more on the coat, I’m tempted to leave it as is so that it doesn’t draw attention from the face. Here’s a close-up:
And finally, here’s the main photo I’ve been working from. Obviously it’s been colourised, and for some reason they made his eyes blue when they were actually brown. Not sure how well I have captured the likeness, portraits are a new area for me. I think the painting at least looks human!
But still a long way to go! I may leave the duffle coat as it is, or maybe just define the area around the hood a little more.
Well, I made a start on painting it! Can see a few drawing errors that, when I fix them, will hopefully make this look vaguely like the photo I’m working from.
Yesterday’s developments. I have got to improve my photography! Just got a white balance / colour checker card, so need to figure out how to use that. Another little ‘to do’ for in my copious spare time…
Bit more done. Sorry about the glare on the left sleeve – caution! Wet paint…
Progress du jour. Blended the mountains into the valley floor a little, added some texture to the foreground rocks, and lightened the shadows a bit. Also made some adjustments to the shady character perching on a rock…
