Here’s the latest on the current work in progress. Still not much more than a sketch at the moment, but I’ve started to get some colour on the canvas. The commandos will be painted in the same colours as the sky, and HMS Campbeltown will also be pretty dark (Op CHARIOT took place at night after all). But there will be some highlighted areas from muzzle flashes, fires on the ship and the in the dockyard, and some tracer fire.
I did consider putting an RN Motor Launch in the foreground, sweeping around the harbour, but couldn’t get the perspective to work. There are a couple of Beaufighters in the pic as well though, which is using some artistic licence as I don’t think they were actually supporting the raid until after daybreak, to cover the withdrawal.
