Possibly finished; will sleep on it and decide tomorrow. Need to think of a title as well…
A bit of progress from last night, most of the darkest darks roughly in place. Enjoying this one so far, it’s nice to work big!
Latest work in progress. Aiming high with this one, what could possibly go wrong?
Made some various tweaks to the face today, and added some more texture to the duffle coat. I’m still not really happy with some aspects of how I’ve painted the face, but have decided to stop as I’m getting that niggly feeling that if I fiddle about much more I may mess things up entirely. (Unless of course the client wants me to adjust anything).
Interestingly, I seem to have made one of those paintings where the eyes follow you around the room…
Here’s a closer view of his face
Well, I made a start on painting it! Can see a few drawing errors that, when I fix them, will hopefully make this look vaguely like the photo I’m working from.
Spending a few days in Austria with the boss for her birthday. Permission was granted to bring my paints so, after a beasting on the slopes (my first time on skis for 20 years) I’ve been getting a quick plein air session in before last light. The painting above was the first one here, more than a little rusty. The one below was done on the following day, had got the eye in a little more with that one I think.
The photos aren’t great as taken with a phone, will get some better ones when we’re back in sunny (ha!) Belgium.
Photos replaced with scans of the paintings – much truer to the real thing as you can imagine!
Bit more done. Saving the best bits ’til last, as usual.
Re-worked the sky and valley floor today. Will tackle the distant mountains next, although they don’t need too much doing to them. Still struggling to get good photographs of my paintings, I think I need to invest in a colour checker card for one thing. Couple of notes to self for stuff to correct in this picture: the right hand needs to be a bit larger and moved closer to the rifle; figure should be wider to the left… there will be more no doubt.
Managed to get a fair bit done to this one over the weekend. What I haven’t managed to do is get a decent photo of it. There’s still quite a bit to do, and I can see some things that I need to fix; the goggles and the creases on the main character’s right trouser-leg for a start. No doubt there are others!
Glad I finished this one, there are a lot of memories in here! This is HMS Ark Royal on a high speed trial in the western Atlantic, 1992.
